How to Be an Exceptional Pilates or Barre Teacher

how to be an excellent barre or pilates instructor

Your guide to inspiring, empowering, and standing out as an instructor.

Whether you’re fresh out of teacher training or years into your movement career, chances are you’ve asked yourself at some point:

“How do I become an exceptional teacher?”

Not just good. Not just confident. But truly magnetic. Someone students come back to – and studios hire – again and again.

The good news? It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being intentional. And being you.

Here’s what we believe makes an exceptional barre or Pilates teacher. And how you can embody it in your own unique way.

1. Know your stuff—deeply

Great teaching starts with great training. It’s not just about memorising sequences. It’s about understanding the why behind every cue, every movement, every breath.
Exceptional teachers can adapt on the fly, teach to different levels, and create safe, smart, effective programming that meets their clients where they’re at.

Looking to level up? Whether it’s Reformer, Mat, Barre, Reformer Yin or Advanced Reformer, our courses are designed to help you feel confident, empowered, and completely prepared.

Real-world example:
A teacher who can shift from high-energy Reformer to calming Reformer Yin becomes indispensable – able to teach across time slots, styles and student needs. That kind of adaptability leads to more bookings, more variety, and ultimately, more career stability.

2. Find your voice

Your voice is your magic. Don’t try to sound like someone else. Find the way you communicate best.
Are you warm and encouraging? Precise and grounded? Joyful and high-energy? When you own your style, your students feel it, and trust you more because of it.

3. Hold the space like a pro

Exceptional teachers create an energy in the room that’s supportive, calm, and safe, even when the sweat is dripping.
That means clear class structure, purposeful transitions, great music, and a sense of presence that says: I’ve got you.

Our Teacher Training programs go beyond technical skills. We help you build the confidence, connection and classroom energy that set truly great teachers apart.

4. Stay a student

The best teachers are always learning. Whether it’s a short course, a new training, or simply exploring your own movement practice, staying curious is essential.
Continual education keeps your teaching fresh, inspired and deeply rooted in growth.

Explore our range of short courses to keep expanding your toolkit—from injuries and modifications to stretch, strength, and meditation.

5. Teach from the heart

Your students won’t always remember the playlist or the choreography. But they’ll always remember how you made them feel.

When you teach from a place of purpose and presence, you invite people into something much bigger than a workout. You create an experience. That’s what sets exceptional teachers apart.

Want to take the next step?

We’d love to support you in your journey to becoming the best teacher you can be. Explore our training options – from 100% online to dreamy in-person immersions – and find the course that meets you where you’re at.

Why Diversifying Your Pilates Career and Certifications Is the Key to Long-Term Success

Why Diversifying Your Pilates Career and Certifications Is the Key to Long-Term Success

In the ever-evolving world of wellness, versatility isn’t just nice to have – it’s essential. Whether you’re just starting your teaching journey or looking to breathe new life into your existing career, diversifying your movement certifications can be the difference between just getting by and truly thriving.

At Barre Body, we’ve trained thousands of teachers – and we’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when instructors broaden their skillsets. Here’s why choosing to diversify your training is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.

Expand Your Reach (and Income)

The more modalities you’re qualified to teach, the more clients you can serve – it’s as simple as that. A Mat-only teacher might be limited to certain class styles or studio roles, but a teacher certified in Mat and Reformer and Pre & Post Natal? They’re instantly more valuable to studios, clients and their own business.

Real-world example:
A teacher who can shift from high-energy Reformer to calming Reformer Yin becomes indispensable – able to teach across time slots, styles and student needs. That kind of adaptability leads to more bookings, more variety, and ultimately, more career stability.

Prevent Burnout and Reignite Passion

Even the most passionate teachers can feel stuck in a rut. Teaching the same class style over and over – no matter how much you love it – can lead to creative fatigue. Adding a new modality doesn’t just freshen your schedule, it can completely shift your energy.

Diversifying your skillset helps you keep learning, stay inspired, and bring that excitement back into every class you teach.

Build Career Longevity and Flexibility

Life changes. Your energy shifts. The needs of your clients evolve. When you’re trained across multiple disciplines, you’re far more equipped to adapt to all of it.

Maybe you want to transition into teaching gentler classes, working with mums, or even training other teachers. Or maybe you want the option to teach online, privately, or in studios around the world. The broader your qualifications, the more doors stay open – now and in the future.

Stand Out in a Crowded Market

The wellness industry is growing rapidly – which means more teachers entering the space every year. So how do you differentiate yourself?

You become the teacher who can do more. Who understands movement from different angles. Who can sub in for anyone, take on more clients, and bring that extra spark to every class.

Studios notice. Clients feel it. And your confidence skyrockets.

Diversification is Empowerment

This isn’t about doing more for the sake of it. It’s about becoming the kind of teacher you dream of being. Confident. Capable. Creative. It’s about building a career on your terms – one that feels fulfilling, sustainable and ever-evolving.

Whether you’re blending Barre with Reformer, or layering in Pre & Post Natal, Reformer Yin, or Jumpboard, every new certification becomes another tool in your teaching toolkit.

Online Pilates Teacher Training: Is It As Good As In-Person?

Online Pilates Teacher Training: Is It As Good As In-Person?

Let’s be honest. There’s something magical about being in a studio. The hum of movement, the buzz of shared energy, the gentle correction from a teacher who just gets it. So when we start talking about online Teacher Training, it’s totally normal to wonder: Can this really work? Can I actually become an amazing teacher… Through a screen?

The short answer? Yes. And in many ways, online training might be exactly what you need to kickstart the career of your dreams.

Whether you’re weighing up your options or just starting to dip a toe into the idea of teaching, we’re here to help you sort the fact from the fluff. Let’s break it down.

1. What Does Online Pilates Training Actually Look Like?

Gone are the days of grainy YouTube videos and downloadable PDFs masquerading as a “course.” Online teacher training has grown up. Think beautifully curated video modules, live workshops, practice assignments with real feedback, and yes, real human connection.

There are two main styles of online learning:

  • Asynchronous (our fancy word for self-paced): Learn when and where it suits you. Want to binge-watch modules on a Sunday morning in your PJs? Go for it.
  • Synchronous: Join live sessions and real-time workshops with your educators and peers, just like you would in a studio, minus the commute.

At Barre Body, our online trainings are a juicy blend of both. You’ll get the flexibility of learning on your own time, paired with the support and structure of live calls, personal mentorship, and a vibrant student community. It’s immersive, interactive, and beautifully designed to make you feel supported every step of the way.

2. The Beauty of Online Pilates Training

There’s a reason online training is booming (and it’s not just because you can do it from bed).

Total flexibility – Whether you’re juggling work, parenting, or just love the freedom to learn at your own pace, online training fits into your life—not the other way around.

Global access – You can train with the best, no matter where you are. No flights, no time off work, no need to relocate.

Rewind + revisit – Ever wished you could go back and replay that cue your teacher gave? With online modules, you can. Again and again. Magic.

No travel required – Forget the traffic, parking, and early alarms. Your living room is the studio now.

3. “But What About…?”

“Can I really learn hands-on skills online?”
Yes, you can. We guide you step-by-step with detailed video demonstrations, practical assignments, and personalised video feedback. You’ll practice teaching on real bodies and get expert eyes on your technique. It’s hands-on; just in a modern way.

“Will I feel supported?”
Absolutely. Our students often say they feel more supported online than in person. With dedicated mentors, regular live Q&As, and a thriving online community, you’re never flying solo.

“Will I be taken seriously as an instructor?”
Absolutely. Barre Body qualifications are industry-recognised and respected. Online or in person, the training is rigorous, professional, and comprehensive. Employers care about what you’ve learned—not how you learned it.

4. Who is Online Training Perfect For?

Online training is a dream come true for:

  • Busy parents juggling school runs and naptimes
  • Full-time workers fitting study around life
  • Regional or international students
  • Introverts who thrive with a little more personal space
  • Self-motivated learners who love doing things their way

That said, in-person training may be a better fit if you thrive on tactile learning, love face-to-face interaction, or want to fully immerse yourself in a studio setting from day one.

Both paths are powerful. It’s about choosing the one that suits you.

5. What to Look for in an Online Training Provider

Not all online courses are created equal, darling. When choosing your training, make sure it offers:

  • Accreditation + industry recognition
  • Structured content (not just a video dump)
  • Mentorship and support
  • Community and connection
  • User-friendly learning platform

Barre Body’s online training ticks every one of these boxes, and then some. From our thoughtfully sequenced curriculum to our 1:1 mentoring and beautiful platform, we’ve designed an experience that feels as supportive as it is expert-led.

Ready to Find Your Fit?

Here’s the truth: Online Pilates training can be just as good as in-person. Sometimes even better. It all depends on you. Your lifestyle, your learning style, and how you want to experience your journey.

So if you’re feeling the call to teach, know that there’s a path waiting that’s tailored just for you.

Download your training guide, or book a friendly call with our team below. We’d love to help you discover which training is best for you.

Mat vs. Reformer Pilates Teacher Training: Which Path Is Right for You?

Mat vs. Reformer Pilates Teacher Training: Which Path Is Right for You?

Choosing your Pilates teacher training path is exciting, inspiring, and (let’s be honest) a little overwhelming. Mat or Reformer? Where do you begin? What leads to the kind of teaching career you’re dreaming of?

First, take a breath. (You’ll need that moving forward.) Both Mat and Reformer Pilates certifications are powerful, respected, and full of possibility. This guide is here to gently help you figure out which one aligns best with your goals, teaching style, and current lifestyle. No pressure, just clarity.

What is Mat Pilates Teacher Training?

Mat Pilates is where many teachers begin—and for good reason. It’s where you learn the foundational principles of Pilates: alignment, breath, core control, cueing, sequencing, and movement with precision. You’ll also explore anatomy, learn how to use props like balls and bands, and build confidence in teaching bodies of all shapes and abilities.

One of the biggest perks of Mat training? It’s beautifully accessible. You don’t need a studio full of equipment to teach—you can start from your living room, a community space, the beach, or on Zoom. It’s also generally more affordable and quicker to complete, making it a fantastic launch pad for a teaching career.

Best for: Those just starting their journey, looking to build strong teaching foundations and the freedom to teach anywhere with low overheads.

What is Reformer Pilates Teacher Training?

Reformer training takes things up a notch, diving deep into the world of springs, straps, pulleys, and resistance mechanics. You’ll learn how to teach safely and creatively on the Reformer, how to modify for injuries, and how to deliver sessions that are both rehabilitative and athletic.

Reformer Pilates is often seen as a more specialised or advanced skill set. It’s in high demand in boutique studios and wellness spaces, and it offers a premium experience that many clients seek out. It’s also a dream path for those who absolutely love Reformer classes and want to spend their days sharing that love.

Best for: Those who are Reformer devotees, want to work in studio environments, or are ready to specialise in a premium, high-impact offering.

Can You Do Both? (And In What Order?)

Absolutely. Many of our instructors start with Mat, then move into Reformer once they’ve found their teaching rhythm and want to expand their offering. Mat training gives you the foundational knowledge and cueing confidence that makes learning the Reformer feel much more intuitive.

If you’re someone who already loves Reformer and has regular access to a studio or machine, you can dive straight in. But for many, starting with Mat is a more accessible way to build momentum and gain real-world teaching experience first.

At Barre Body, we also offer bundled training options so you can seamlessly transition from one to the other—or do both concurrently in a supported, structured way.

Choosing the Right Path for You

If you’re still on the fence, try asking yourself:

  • Where do I want to teach—studios, online, community spaces, or all of the above?
  • Do I want to get teaching sooner, or am I ready to invest in a longer, more equipment-focused journey?
  • Which style do I love practising the most?
  • Am I drawn to hands-on, high-energy environments, or do I thrive in simplicity and flexibility?

There’s no wrong answer—only what’s right for your life and vision right now. You can always add more tools to your teaching toolkit as you go. In fact, most instructors do.

Still Unsure? Let’s Talk It Through.

Both Mat and Reformer training can lead to empowering, deeply fulfilling careers. Whether you’re dreaming of teaching in a high-end studio or running your own classes from the park, there’s a path for you—and we’d love to help you find it.

How to Become a Pilates Mat Instructor

How to Become a Pilates Mat Instructor

Since you’ve found yourself here, it’s safe to assume you’ve fallen in love with Pilates. (Great choice. Join our club.) And if you’re thinking about turning that passion into a career? Well, now we really think you’re onto something.

A career as a Pilates Mat instructor is both rewarding and transformative. If you are passionate about movement, strength, and helping others improve their wellbeing, it doesn’t get much better than Pilates. However, becoming a highly skilled, employable and confident instructor requires more than just enthusiasm (though that will get you a very long way). You’ll need comprehensive training, expert guidance, and a deep understanding of both technique and teaching methodology. Thankfully, you’re in the right place!

If you’re ready to take the next step, here’s everything you need to know about becoming a Pilates Mat instructor.

Step 1: Cultivate your passion and deepen your practice
A great Pilates instructor is first and foremost a dedicated student. Before stepping into a teaching role, it’s essential to build a strong personal practice. Take a variety of classes, explore different teaching styles, and gain an understanding of the movement principles that underpin Pilates. This will help you develop body awareness and refine your technique, both of which are crucial elements for guiding others effectively. But perhaps most importantly? Take your time in determining the class types and teaching styles that resonate with you most. This will help you in some future decision making … (Stay tuned.)

Step 2: Research a certified Pilates Mat Training Program
Once you have established a strong foundation in your own practice, the next step is to do some research! Perhaps you’re already there. When you’re researching, you’ll want to look for an accredited Pilates Mat instructor training program. A high-quality program will cover:

  • Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding how the body moves and functions is critical for teaching safe and effective classes.
  • Pilates Principles and Techniques: A comprehensive training will teach you not only the exercises themselves but also the foundational principles that define Pilates, such as control, concentration, precision, and breath.
  • Class Planning and Sequencing: Learning how to structure classes for different levels and needs will set you up for success.
  • Teaching Methodology: Cueing, demonstration, hands-on corrections, and adapting to different learning styles are all essential skills for an instructor.
  • Practical Experience: A reputable training program will require practice teaching hours so that you gain hands-on experience before working with real clients.

Step 3: Choose the right training provider
Not all Pilates training programs are created equal. The quality of your education will directly impact your skills, confidence and career prospects, so you’ll need to choose a provider with a strong reputation. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting a training partner:

  • Accreditation and Recognition: Ensure that the program is accredited and recognised within the industry so that your certification is widely accepted.
  • Quality of Instruction: Look for experienced educators who are deeply knowledgeable and actively working in the industry.
  • Comprehensive Curriculum: A well-rounded program should balance theory, technique, and teaching practice.
  • Flexibility: Consider whether the training is offered in-person, online, or in a blended format to suit your schedule and learning preferences.
  • Ongoing Support: A strong training provider should offer mentorship, career guidance, and a supportive community to help you succeed beyond certification.

So, now is the time when it would be remiss for us not to mention Barre Body Teacher Training. We always encourage all our students to find the right partner for them. And if it’s us? Well, consider us blushing.

If you’re looking for industry-leading Pilates Mat training, Barre Body is among Australia’s most trusted and comprehensive providers. Our programs are designed by leading experts to ensure that as a graduate, you will be confident, knowledgeable, certified, and fully prepared to teach incredible classes from day one. Here’s what sets us apart:

  • A Comprehensive, Science-Based Curriculum: Our training is underpinned by a strong foundation in anatomy, biomechanics, and movement science, ensuring you graduate with a deep understanding of the Pilates method.
  • World-Class Educators: Our instructors are some of the most experienced and respected professionals in the industry, dedicated to providing exceptional training.
Practical, Hands-On Learning: We go beyond theory to provide extensive practical teaching experience, preparing you to lead classes with confidence.
  • Flexibility to Suit Your Lifestyle: With both in-person and online training options, you can choose a format that works for you.
  • Ongoing Career Support: Our graduates become part of the Barre Body family, with access to ongoing mentorship, resources, and industry connections.
  • A Focus On You: Perhaps our favourite part. We don’t pump out cookie cutter graduates. We dig a little deeper to determine what makes you shine. We’ll help you to unlock your own teaching magic, so you can be the very best, most authentic teacher you can be.

Step 4: Complete your training and certification
During your training, you will be required to complete coursework, attend practical sessions, and accumulate practice teaching hours. Once you have met the program requirements, you will need to pass a practical and/or theoretical assessment to gain certification. This ensures that you are fully equipped to teach safely and effectively.

At Barre Body, that looks like you recording yourself teaching to clients, and us providing you with a cheerleader load of support!

Step 5: Begin teaching and continue learning
With your certification in hand, you are now ready to start teaching (hooray!). Whether you choose to work in a studio, offer private sessions, or even launch your own business, the opportunities are vast. However, the journey doesn’t end here. Continuing education is key to staying at the forefront of the industry. Consider pursuing additional training in specialised areas, whether it’s such as pre and postnatal Pilates, Reformer Pilates, or advanced anatomy to refine your skills and expand your offerings.

Final Thoughts
Becoming a Pilates Mat instructor is a fulfilling and empowering career choice. (We’ve lived it. Bought the t-shirt.) With the right training, dedication and support, you can turn your passion into a profession that lights you up and makes a positive difference in the lives of others. If you’re ready to take the next step, explore our Pilates Mat Teacher Training and start your journey with the best in the industry. (You know we had to say that.) How to Build an Online Pilates Business and Teach from Anywhere

Insights from Barre Body founder, Emma Seibold.

Why Teaching Pilates Online is a Game-Changer

I have always believed in the power of movement. Not just for our physical health, but for our confidence, joy, and overall wellbeing. As a corporate woman in my early 20s, I became addicted to the transformative power of yoga. As a new mum, I discovered the incredible results of barre. And as an entrepreneur, I completely changed the course of my life through the creation of my movement-led businesses – Barre Body, Barre Body Teacher Training, Bende and Barre Body Online.

Throughout this wild and wonderful journey, I’ve learned first-hand that movement (whether Barre, Pilates, Strength, Reformer, or your favourite combination!) is a practice that transforms lives in the very best way. And in today’s world, the opportunity to share this gift has never been greater. The rise of virtual fitness has opened doors for instructors to teach from anywhere, reach a global audience, and create a business that offers freedom, flexibility, and financial independence.

At Barre Body, we saw this shift early on. We launched Barre Body Online years ago (long before the WFH days of the pandemic!), and now we have clients streaming our classes from every corner of the world. In addition to that, our Barre Body Teacher Training graduates amaze me every day with their stories of their own successful online studios. They’re teaching from home, while travelling, or even from the beach (yes, really. I’m jealous too). So, whether you’re a qualified instructor looking to expand beyond in-person teaching or are considering what a career instructing looks like, this guide will show you exactly how to make online Pilates work for you.

One thing to remember: you don’t need a massive social media following to be successful—you simply need a clear strategy, a unique voice (your own!), and the confidence to start.

Step 1: Define Your Online Pilates Business Model

Your online Pilates business can take many forms, and finding the right one depends on your strengths, teaching style, and goals. Here are some options to consider:

  • Live Zoom classes – Hosting real-time sessions can create deep client connections and a strong sense of accountability. This model works well if you thrive in interactive environments and enjoy seeing clients’ progress in real time. While we began Barre Body Online as a regularly-updated library, we began offering live classes during the pandemic, when a consistent schedule and mix of class styles kept engagement high. Plus, clients love the energy of a live class—there’s something special about sweating together, even through a screen.
  • On-demand courses or memberships – This model allows for passive income, meaning you can earn while you sleep! By creating a library of pre-recorded workouts, you provide flexibility for clients while scaling your business. This is exactly how Barre Body Online has grown—by offering structured programs that help clients stay consistent.
  • Hybrid model – A combination of live and pre-recorded content offers the best of both worlds. You can run live sessions for community-building while offering recorded workouts for those who prefer flexibility. Many of our Barre Body Teacher Training grads take this approach, and it works brilliantly.
  • Subscription-based or pay-per-class – A monthly membership provides consistent revenue, while a pay-per-class model allows clients to purchase sessions as needed. If you’re just starting out, consider offering both options to see what your audience responds to.

Just as important as your format is your niche. When you narrow your focus, you make it easier to attract your ideal clients. Some niches to explore:

  • Beginner-friendly Pilates – A great way to reach those new to Pilates who might be intimidated by in-person classes.
  • Pre/postnatal Pilates – Perfect for new and expecting mums who need safe, effective workouts. (We’ve trained so many incredible instructors in this space!)
  • Reformer-inspired mat workouts – If you love Reformer Pilates but don’t have access to the equipment, mat-based workouts that replicate Reformer movements can be highly appealing.
  • Pilates for athletic performance & injury prevention – If you have expertise in working with athletes or rehabilitation, this can be a lucrative niche.

Tip: The more specific your niche, the easier it is to build a loyal client base. When we started Barre Body, we focused on making our classes accessible and joyful, and that clarity helped attract the right people.

Step 2: Set Up Your Tech & Your Online Studio

Creating a seamless online experience for your clients starts with the right setup. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • High-quality camera/webcam – Investing in a good camera ensures clear video quality, which enhances professionalism. I use a high-definition webcam for live classes and a professional camera for pre-recorded content.
  • Wireless microphone or headset – Audio clarity is just as important as video. A wireless mic allows you to move freely while ensuring your clients hear every cue.
  • Tripod or phone stand – Stability is key! A shaky camera can be distracting, so using a tripod is essential for maintaining a professional look.
  • Ring light or natural lighting – Good lighting enhances video quality. I always position myself near a window or use a ring light when filming.

When it comes to platforms, choose the best fit for your style:

  • Live classes – Zoom, YouTube Live, Instagram Live (Zoom is great for private clients, while YouTube and Instagram are good for building an audience).
  • On-demand content – Teachable, Kajabi, Uscreen.
  • Scheduling & payments – Acuity, Momence, Calendly (Automating bookings and payments makes life easier!).

Tip: Always test your setup before going live to ensure a smooth experience. Nothing kills the mood like your mic cutting out mid-teaser!

Step 3: Build Your Brand & Online Presence

Your brand isn’t just a logo—it’s how people feel when they experience your teaching. Here’s how to make an impact:

  • Create a professional website with class offerings, pricing, testimonials, and an easy booking system. When we built Barre Body, we made sure the website reflected our values: elegant, inviting, professional and just a little bit cheeky.
  • Use social media strategically:
    • Instagram & TikTok for visibility—short clips of workouts and behind-the-scenes moments build connection.
    • YouTube for long-form content & SEO—offering valuable free content helps attract clients organically.
    • Facebook groups for community engagement—having a private space for clients fosters loyalty.
  • Grow your email list:
    • Offer a free mini-class or workout guide—this builds trust and provides a taste of your style.
    • Send regular newsletters with tips & invites—consistency is key to keeping clients engaged.

Tip: Authenticity wins. Share your story, your energy, and your passion.
