Movement, Meaning & Mentorship: A Conversation with Instructor of the Year 2026, Sam Sales

Awarded Instructor of the Year 2026, Samantha Sales shares her insights on movement, mentorship, innovation, and the future of Pilates – revealing why the most powerful transformations happen when we see people as more than just bodies in motion.

After being awarded Instructor of the Year 2026 at The Pilates Expo, Samantha Sales continues to inspire both students and teachers through her deeply human-centred approach to movement, education, and wellbeing. With nearly two decades of experience across Pilates, yoga, retreats, workshops, and teacher trainings, she has become known not only for her expertise but for the passion, authenticity, and compassion she brings into every space she teaches. In this interview, she shares her evolving philosophy on movement, the future of the Pilates industry, and why connection and care remain at the heart of everything she does.

Winning Instructor of the Year 2026 at The Pilates Expo is a huge achievement – what does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?

Winning Instructor of the Year 2026 at The Pilates Expo is an incredible honour, both personally and professionally. To be recognised amongst so many talented and passionate instructors who dedicate their time, energy, and heart to supporting and inspiring their students is truly humbling.

Pilates has always been so much more to me than just movement. It’s about helping people build confidence, strength, connection, and resilience within themselves. To receive this recognition for doing something I genuinely love is incredibly meaningful, and something I’m deeply grateful for.

What do you think sets a truly exceptional Pilates instructor apart in today’s wellness and fitness industry?

I believe what truly sets an exceptional Pilates instructor apart is, first and foremost, passion. You can have all the knowledge in the world, understand anatomy inside and out, and be able to perform the most advanced exercises, but if you don’t genuinely love what you do, it shows.

Great instructors go beyond teaching movement. They are fully present with their students and deeply committed to serving and supporting them. Pilates is about connection, energy, and creating an experience where people feel seen, challenged, and empowered. That level of care can only come from someone truly passionate about their craft.

Of course, there are always going to be days when you feel tired or uninspired, because we are all human. But I think that’s when the real work begins. It’s about returning to your own practice, reconnecting to why you fell in love with Pilates in the first place, and allowing that passion to continue guiding you. When instructors continue to nurture their own connection to the method, it naturally flows into the way they teach and inspire others.

Over the years, how has your teaching philosophy evolved, and what continues to inspire your approach to movement and client transformation?

When I first started teaching nearly two decades ago, I was very much a stickler for the rules. My training was grounded in a more classical approach to Pilates, and at the time, I believed there was a very clear “right” and “wrong” way to teach and move.

But over the years, through exploring both Pilates and yoga within my own body, and through teaching thousands of classes, retreats, workshops, and teacher trainings, my philosophy has evolved tremendously. I’ve come to realise that while foundations and technique are incredibly important, movement is never one-size-fits-all.

Every body is a unique and beautiful reflection of a person’s lived experience, and as instructors, our role is to teach the body in front of us, not just the method written in a book. Sometimes the most powerful teaching comes from knowing when to adapt, when to listen, and when to let go of rigid rules in order to truly support the individual.

What continues to inspire me is witnessing the transformation that happens when people feel empowered in their own bodies. Movement has the ability to build confidence, connection, resilience, and self-awareness, and being able to guide people through that journey is something I never take for granted.

The Pilates industry is growing rapidly across Australia and internationally – what trends or changes are you most excited about for the future of Pilates?

I’ve never really been someone who follows trends, because to me, trends often feel temporary and short-lived. Pilates, at its core, is such a timeless practice, so what excites me most isn’t necessarily the latest craze, but the deeper evolution of the industry itself.

What I am incredibly excited about is the growing recognition of the connection between movement and mental health. More and more, we are understanding that our students come to us for so much more than just physical exercise. Pilates has the power to support nervous system regulation, stress management, emotional well-being, and even trauma-informed healing in a truly profound way.

I think the future of Pilates lies in creating spaces where people not only move their bodies, but also feel safe, supported, connected, and empowered. Seeing the industry embrace a more holistic approach to health and well-being is something I find incredibly inspiring, and I believe it will continue to transform the way we teach and the impact we can have on people’s lives.

Many aspiring instructors look up to award winners like yourself. What advice would you give to new Pilates teachers wanting to build a long-lasting and impactful career?

Stay curious, keep expanding your knowledge, and remain open to evolving as both a teacher and a person. Attend workshops, expos, trainings, and classes whenever you can, because every experience offers an opportunity to grow and refine your craft. We are so lucky to be in a time where there are so many opportunities for continued education, and Australia really is at the forefront of this, so capture those opportunities.

I also believe authenticity is incredibly important. The most impactful instructors are the ones who teach from a genuine place and bring their own energy, personality, and passion into the room. Passion is everything in this industry. As soon as you lose that connection to why you started, your teaching can begin to feel stale. That’s why maintaining your own personal practice is so important; it keeps you inspired, connected, and continually learning through your own body.

Find teachers and mentors who inspire you and learn from them. Surrounding yourself with people you admire can completely shape the way you grow within the industry. At the same time, remember that no instructor is everyone’s favourite teacher, and that’s okay. You will always be your own harshest critic, but the goal is not perfection; it’s progress. If you can continue showing up each day, striving to be a little better than you were yesterday, you’ll build a career that is both long-lasting and deeply impactful.

After being named Instructor of the Year 2026, what’s next for you – are there any new projects, goals, or visions you’re excited to share?

Right now, my passion is deeply immersed in continued education and sharing knowledge with others. I absolutely adore being a facilitator for the Barre Body teacher trainings, and I feel incredibly grateful to have opportunities to present at events such as the Pilates Journal Expo and FOMME. Being able to educate, connect, and contribute to the evolution of the industry in this way is something I truly cherish.

One project especially close to my heart has been bringing Reformer Yin to life. To take years of personal study, experience, and learning and channel that into creating an entirely new style of practice has been something I never could have imagined when I first started teaching. Watching people connect with the method and experience movement in such a different and meaningful way has been incredibly rewarding.

Moving forward, I’m really passionate about continuing conversations around seeing our students as more than just bodies to move. Every person who walks into a studio brings with them emotions, lived experiences, stress, resilience, and sometimes trauma, and I believe as instructors we have the opportunity to hold space for all of that with compassion and awareness.

My hope is to continue expanding these teachings, presenting at more events, and helping shift the Pilates industry toward a more human-centred and holistic approach to movement, connection, and well-being. There’s also some really exciting things happening in the evolution of the TLC of app, but I can’t share too much info in this just yet – keep your eyes peeled!

How Pilates Teacher Training Reshapes More Than Your Career

How Pilates Teacher Training Transforms More Than Your Career

(The Personal Benefits No One Talks About!)

Pilates teacher training is often seen as a professional pathway, but what most people discover is that it reshapes so much more than their career. It changes the way you move, the way you think, the way you hold yourself and the way you show up in your life. It is one of the rare experiences that strengthens you on every level, often in ways you never expected.

This is the part of the journey no one really talks about, yet it is the part that stays with you long after your course is complete.

A New Connection To Your Body

One of the first shifts people notice is a deeper awareness of their body. Training takes you into alignment, breath, mobility and functional movement in a way that feels both empowering and grounding. You begin to understand the mechanics of your body with clarity and curiosity.

As your awareness grows, so does your strength. Daily movement starts to feel more conscious and more supported. You notice how you walk, how you stand, how you lift and how you breathe. These are subtle changes, but they build a foundation of confidence that carries through your entire life.

Confidence That Comes From Within

Learning to teach requires courage. You practise speaking clearly. You guide others. You receive feedback that strengthens your skills and your sense of self. Little by little, your confidence begins to shift from something external to something internal.

You learn to trust your voice. You learn to lead with clarity. You learn that you can hold space for others in a way that feels steady and authentic. For many trainees, this becomes one of the most powerful and unexpected outcomes of the entire journey.

Mindset Shifts You Carry Everywhere

Teacher training has a beautiful way of reshaping your mindset. As you move through modules and teaching practice, you cultivate presence, resilience and self trust. You begin to meet challenges with curiosity rather than fear.

Clear communication becomes easier. Boundaries become stronger. You learn to breathe through moments that once felt overwhelming. These shifts extend far beyond the studio and into your relationships, your work and your everyday life.

A Community That Stays With You

One of the most treasured parts of teacher training is the community you gain. The shared learning experience creates connection in a way that feels rare and meaningful. You grow together. You encourage one another. You celebrate the small moments and the big ones.

Many people leave training with lifelong friendships and a network of teachers who continue to support them throughout their career. It is one of the most nourishing elements of the entire experience.

Purpose, Fulfilment And The Joy Of Helping Others

Teaching Pilates is meaningful work. You guide people into strength, confidence and connection with their own bodies. You help them feel better, move better and understand themselves more deeply. It is a career that is both people first and purpose driven.

For many teachers, the sense of fulfilment becomes the greatest reward. You realise that your training did not just give you a new career. It gave you a new sense of purpose.

Your Transformation Starts Here

If you feel called to teach, know that the transformation is so much more than certificates or new skills. It is a journey that strengthens your body, expands your mindset, lifts your confidence and connects you with a community that truly sees you.

If you are ready for the next step, our teacher training pathways are here to support you. Your journey begins with a single decision and the person you become along the way might just surprise you.

The Future of Pilates Teaching – Trends Every New Instructor Should Know in 2026

Trends Every New Instructor Should Know in 2026

Pilates continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace and the most successful teachers are the ones who evolve with it. As the global wellness industry expands, instructors who understand emerging trends will be positioned for long term growth, greater career opportunities and a deeper impact in their classes.

If you are beginning your teaching journey, these are the trends shaping Pilates education and practice in 2026.

Trend 1: Intelligent And Functional Movement

Pilates is shifting further toward intelligent programming that supports real life movement. There is a growing emphasis on biomechanics, joint health and long term functional strength. Students are prioritising practices that help them move well for years, not just for the next workout.

Teachers who can assess alignment, understand load and craft classes that support sustainable strength will be in especially high demand. This is the direction the entire industry is heading.

Trend 2: Hybrid Teaching Across Multiple Platforms

The most successful instructors of 2026 will be those who can teach both in studio and online. Hybrid teaching expands your career potential and allows you to reach students anywhere in the world.

Online classes, private coaching, virtual corporate wellbeing programs and on demand content continue to grow rapidly. Versatility has become one of the most valuable skills a teacher can cultivate.

Trend 3: Creative And Evolving Class Design

Students are seeking classes that feel thoughtful, contemporary and creatively sequenced. The future of Pilates blends classical principles with innovative class structure and intelligent variations.

Teachers who develop their own style, experiment with flow and understand how to progress and regress movement will stand out in a busy market. Creativity grounded in strong technical knowledge is the new benchmark for excellence.

Trend 4: Trauma Informed And Inclusive Teaching

Safety and accessibility are now essential skills for all instructors. Trauma informed teaching practices and inclusive language are rapidly becoming standard in the industry.

Teachers who know how to create supportive environments for diverse bodies and diverse experiences will build trust, increase retention and elevate the quality of their classes. This is not a trend that will disappear. It is a permanent shift toward more mindful and compassionate teaching.

Trend 5: Global Mobility For Teachers

Pilates continues to grow internationally with new studios, retreat centres and boutique spaces opening around the world. Well trained teachers are increasingly able to work abroad, host retreats and build global careers.

With education that is widely recognised and respected, teachers can work in multiple countries and expand their professional horizons far beyond their local studio community. This is one of the most exciting elements of the modern Pilates landscape.

Trend 6: Mat Training As The Foundation For Reformer Careers

As Reformer studios continue to boom, the demand for teachers with strong mat foundations has never been higher. Mat training develops technical understanding, cueing skill and intelligent sequencing that carries through to every piece of equipment.

Studios are prioritising teachers who can deliver safe and effective Reformer classes because they understand the fundamentals of the method. Mat training remains the most valuable entry point for new instructors.

Staying Ahead Of The Future

The industry is expanding, careers are diversifying and students are seeking teachers with knowledge, adaptability and a genuine commitment to intelligent movement. If you want to stay at the forefront of Pilates teaching, world class education is the place to begin.

Our teacher training programs are designed to prepare you for the future of the industry and to support you as you build a career that feels meaningful and aligned.

Your journey starts with the training that shapes your foundation.

Let’s go!

Why Pilates Is One of the Fastest Growing Careers in Wellness – 2026 Outlook

considering a career in pilates?

Pilates is having a global moment and the momentum is only increasing. As more people prioritise mindful movement, longevity and sustainable fitness practices, Pilates has stepped into the spotlight as one of the most future-aligned wellness careers. What was once considered a niche modality is now recognised as a powerful, intelligent and accessible form of movement that supports bodies across every life stage.

If you are considering a career in wellness, the Pilates landscape in 2026 offers opportunity, growth and stability in a way the industry has not seen before.

Why The Industry Is Growing So Quickly

Pilates sits at the intersection of many major trends in health and wellbeing. There is a rising demand for low impact exercise that supports mobility, joint health and long term function. As people move away from intensity for intensity’s sake, they are choosing practices that build strength without burnout.

Postural health and spinal mobility have become key areas of focus as more people work at desks and experience the effects of sedentary living. The science of longevity has also entered mainstream conversation and Pilates continues to be recommended by physiotherapists, doctors and movement specialists.

The global studio landscape is expanding at record pace and new boutique spaces are opening every month. With this growth comes a parallel rise in demand for well trained teachers who can deliver safe, intelligent and engaging classes.

Career Flexibility And The Appeal For Teachers

One of the reasons Pilates has become such a powerful career path is the flexibility it offers. Teachers can build careers in studio settings, online platforms, private client work, corporate wellbeing programs or hybrid combinations of all four.

It is a profession that adapts beautifully to your lifestyle. Some teachers work full time and make it their primary focus while others teach part time around family life or alongside another career. It is a skill set with enormous versatility which is why it attracts such a wide range of people.

Why Pilates Instructors Are In High Demand

Studios thrive when they retain students and Pilates has some of the highest retention rates in the fitness industry. Consistent attendance requires skilled teaching and students return to teachers who cue clearly, program intelligently and make them feel safe.

There is a significant need for confident instructors who understand anatomy, sequencing and functional movement. The rapid growth of Reformer has also increased the number of entry points for new teachers and has created a strong demand for high quality mat trained instructors who can support diverse class offerings.

Global Mobility For Teachers

One of the most compelling aspects of a Pilates career is the ability to teach anywhere in the world. Pilates education is recognised globally which means your certificate opens doors far beyond your local studio community.

Barre Body has seen this firsthand as our global network continues to grow. From Australia to Asia to North America and beyond, well trained teachers are welcomed everywhere because the skill set is universal.

With digital education continuing to evolve, the opportunities for online teaching and international client bases are expanding rapidly.

Who This Career Suits

Pilates teaching is a natural fit for people who love movement, learning and connection. It suits creatives who want meaningful work, carers who enjoy supporting others and career changers who want to build a life that feels aligned with their values.

Whether you arrive from a fitness background or from a completely different field, the industry is full of teachers who started exactly where you are now.

Begin Your Journey

If you feel called to explore Pilates as a career, now is a powerful moment to step in. The industry is expanding. Studios are hiring. Global demand is strong. And the work itself is rewarding on every level.

What to Expect in Your First Pilates Teacher Training: A Complete Guide

alex and tallis

Starting your first Pilates teacher training is a big and beautiful moment. There will likely be excitement, nerves and most importantly, a quiet pull toward the life you are stepping into on the other side of this training. This journey has a way of expanding you in ways you cannot yet see, and it all begins with a single yes!

This guide walks you through what your training will look like, how you will learn and what you will gain along the way.

How Your Training Is Structured

Your training takes you deep into the world of Pilates. You will move through modules on anatomy, technique, sequencing and cueing, gradually building a clear understanding of how movement works and how to teach it with confidence and purpose.

There is a thoughtful blend of theory and embodied practice. As you explore the method in your own body, you will begin to notice how the principles you learn on paper translate into strength, awareness and intelligent movement. Concepts that once felt new will start to make sense and your foundation will grow stronger each day.

The Environment You Will Learn In

The training space is designed to support and uplift you. Our educators see your potential from the moment you walk in and they will guide you with a balance of compassion, clarity and expertise. The small group atmosphere creates a sense of connection where questions are welcomed, exploration is encouraged and learning feels collaborative rather than overwhelming.

With hands-on guidance and an emphasis on safety and functional movement, you will develop not only knowledge but a deep trust in your ability to teach others well.

How You Will Learn and Grow

Throughout the training, you will practise teaching through structured drills that help you find your rhythm and your voice. You will guide your peers and receive feedback that is constructive and empowering, helping you refine your cueing, sequencing and presence in the room.

You will also have a library of videos and notes that you can revisit whenever you need. These materials become invaluable tools as you grow into your teaching practice, supporting you long after your course has finished.

What You Need To Bring

The most important things you will bring into your training are your mindset and your willingness to grow. Arrive with curiosity, commitment and an open heart. You are not expected to know everything. You are simply invited to become someone who wants to learn.

On a practical level, you will need comfortable clothing, water, a notebook and any equipment recommended by your educators. Everything else will unfold along the way.

What You Will Walk Away With

You will leave this training with genuine teaching confidence, grounded in a strong understanding of technique, sequencing and intelligent cueing. You will know how to hold space for students, how to keep them safe and how to guide them with clarity and care.

You will also walk away with a community. The people you train beside often become the friends and colleagues who support you for years to come. And beyond the skills and knowledge, you will notice a shift within yourself. A sense of strength. A clearer voice. A deeper connection to your purpose.

Your Journey Starts Here

Every teacher begins where you are now. Standing at the beginning of something that feels exciting and meaningful, knowing that life could expand in a new direction.

If you feel that spark inside you, our trainings are ready to welcome you. Your journey starts here.
