Why should you stretch?
The music begins to slow, the teacher softens their approach, your class has five minutes left … Yes, it’s time to stretch. If you have ever mentally switched off as soon as stretch time comes after an intense class, you’re certainly not alone. After a high intensity workout, the stretching component can often be seen as the one barrier between you and your post-workout juice. However, while stretching may not have your muscles burning or heart racing, it turns out it can be just as beneficial for your body. In fact, Vogue thinks it may be the secret to taking your workouts to the next level.
If you’re working out regularly, the need for structured recovery time can’t be underestimated. If you’re focusing only on cardio and toning, you might be creating imbalances in your body. Stretching (and the resulting flexibility) can be your new best friend.
Inflexibility can create huge long term problems. Tightness of the muscles can restrict the flexibility of your joints as well, which can create full-body fatigue. (And therefore less of those high intensity classes you love). So by maintaining a regular stretching regime, balanced with your favourite classes, you’ll be ensuring your body is balanced and will be focused on long-term strength and resilience.
At Barre Body, we always incorporate an element of stretching into each class – not only at the end of your workout, but throughout your class as well. This means you’ll be coaxing your muscles towards relaxation, and maximising the benefits from every class.
