The Local List by Barre Body

Words: Gemma Dawkins

With studios across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and yet not one in Gundagai or Donnybrook, we’ll let you in on a little secret. Yes, we’re city slickers through and through at Barre Body. Surprise! The sound of distant sirens and traffic flow is as soothing to our ears as wind whistling through the trees.

It’s an urban jungle out there, but in our years at the barre we’ve found the hidden gems and the old faithfuls that populate our local streets. Our neighbours are a talented bunch. And in the neighbourly spirit, we thought we’d share the love. Here are our local faves at a Barre Body near you.

(Except if you live in Alice Springs. In which case, Barre Body Online, babes.)

Mr Mister Cafe

Our favourite activity! In Melbourne, we can’t go past Mr Mister café for brunchy, lunchy goodness served up with great coffee (it’s Melbourne, obvi) and cool vibes. Only figuratively though. We walk right past it on the way to our Windsor studio.

In Sydney life is superspeed, so the grab and go health shelf at Cali Press takes the cake. And gives us a juice and a salad instead. Once you’ve tasted their cacao slice, you won’t even be mad about the cake.

Heading north, you simply can’t beat Kiss The Berry for the ultimate post-barre pick me up: the Acai bowl. Loaded with flavour and fun, you’ll feel like a kid in an ice cream shop. Go crazy with the toppings – with bee pollen, coconut flakes, house made granola and more on offer, it’s guilt-free indulgence.

The quickest way to brighten your day (apart from paying us a visit) has to be with a little leaf love. In Melbourne the girls at Bosque source gorgeous plants and pots and deliver them to you or your lovers for less than the price of a bouquet. And they last as long as you remember to water them!

Sydney’s sexiest leaves are found at Leaf Supply where you can even sign up for a subscription to receive a new plant friend each month. They plant lady is the new cat lady and well, we’re on board.

If you’re in Brisbane, Wilde Flora run regular workshops to give your green thumb a workout. From terrariums to kokedama, flower crowns and more, it’s a Sunday sesh you won’t need to recover from.

They don’t call it therapy for nothing. Our current obsessions? The Karma Collective make candles with a conscience. Hand poured in Melbourne, a portion of all profits go to charity (plus, they look and smell divine). Speaking of scent, Sydney’s Atelier Lumira create the most luxe perfumes and oils – including a Tonic of Gin scented candle. Um, where have you been all our lives? In Brisbane we’re crushing – literally – on the gorgeously crumpled linens at Flaex Design, accessorised to perfection with delicate handmade jewellery by Flame and Pickle. Ringing bells? If you attended any of our Lady Powers events this month you would have received a beautiful little recycled silver ring in your goodie bag, courtesy of Flame and Pickle.

You don’t need to tell us twice! Self-care is celebrated these days and we’re ALL about it. If you’re new to the game, here are our picks:

Melbourne, book yourself in to the self-care gurus at Miss Fox for the perfect combination of holistic and heavenly. It truly is a sanctuary. Or, pop into cheeky salon The Blow for the ultimate pre-party pep up (and amazing hair, obviously).

In Sydney give yourself the pamper treatment with mobile manicurists Purely Polished, who have just added lash treatments to their services. Heaven! At home!

Our Brisbane babes are spoiled for choice in the beauty department, with incredible holistic facials on offer at Kindred Toxin Free (ask about Gua Sha!) , home skincare and affirmation rituals by Eunoia, and sustainable, organic, cruelty-free hair styling at Mikki Auld.
