Is non-toxic deodorant important? (And which ones should you buy?)
If you’ve been in one of our studios lately, you will have seen some beautiful natural deodorant in amongst the products to indulge in after class. However, we are often met with the questions, “Why do I need non-toxic deodorant anyway?” and even more so, “Does it work!?”
We thought we’d crack the code right here – to tell you everything you need to know about natural deodorants, and to share some of our favourite products for when you make the switch!
How do ‘conventional’ deodorants work?
Conventional antiperspirants work by reacting with sweat to create a temporary plug in your sweat glands. They also kill the bacteria that live on your skin.
Why is this bad?
Studies have been linked (but not conclusively proven) to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, liver disease and so much more … What’s more, plugging sweat glands and depositing elements like fragrance, aluminium, and powerful synthetic antibacterial agents right where so many of the body’s lymph glands (critical to the body’s immune system) is never a great idea.
Ah!! Will natural deodorants work?
A number of clean-beauty companies have developed deodorants that do none of the above, and still work. They’re pretty amazing, and have to be tried to be believed. That said, there is a transition period. Your body expels toxins and adjusts, and it might scare you right back to your usual chemical deodorant. While this adjustment can be rough, it’s totally worth it in the end. Just stick with it.
What are Barre Body’s favourites?
In our studios, we use Sukin, which is a big team favourite. Many of our teachers also like Wedela (the sage ‘flavour’ is amazing), and Bec even said, “I have been using it for ages, and in time began to sweat less and smell less, after my body got used to not having chemicals & things blocking my sweat glands (which actually made me more sweaty).” She makes a very good case! We can also vouch for Earths Purities, who make a lovely, hardworking deodorant. And if you’re after a cult classic, try Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Deodorant Paste – which has rave reviews all over the internet.
Or, if you’re keen to go completely all-natural (which many of our teachers swear by, and we can vouch for the fact that they smell lovely), here is a great article to get you started. And many thanks to Goop for the inspiration!
